THE CALL TO REPENTANCE

In recent years there have been “scholarly” men that have gone to great lengths in seeking to prove that repentance is not part of the gospel message. Many articles and books have been written by those trying to prove the point. What would motivate many to do such a thing when the bible plainly calls sinners to repentance?I want to suggest some reasons why.

1. The influence of pragmatism. Repentance is not a popular subject, and probably will not draw a crowd. When the goal becomes getting more people in the pews most anything goes. Pragmatism says the end justifies the means. In plain language. Give the people what they want. And they are not eager to hear sermons on repentance.

2. Fear. Fear that strong preaching on repentance may ruffle feathers and cause a bit of unrest among the troops. Thus the decision to continue scratching the itching ears.

3. Some have taught that any emphasis on repentance is akin to preaching salvation by works. Repentance is a gift given by God, just as faith is. (II Timothy 2:25 Acts 11:18)

Please note some of the very first words we have from our Lord, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)

Luke nears the end of his gospel with these words, “That repentance and remission of sins be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:47)

Paul said this of his own ministry, “But declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.” (Acts 26:20)
